'ART and SOCIAL continuous tension' Symposium
The Boardroom, Limerick School of Art and Design, Clare Street, Limerick
9:30 am - 13:00 pm Wednesday, May 11, 2016

Postgraduates of the MA in Social Practice and the Creative Environment programme at the Limerick School of Art and Design, 'ART and SOCIAL continuous tension', invited the creative community of Limerick to investigate its own relationship to social art. Over a morning of discussions and investigation, using some of the provocations of critic Claire Bishop, they examined the operational tensions around the application of the social turn in the arts.

The discussions centred on the responses of the existing art infrastructures in Limerick to the demands of socially engaged projects. Examples of best practice were examined and open discussions around the challenges and opportunities these projects pose to artists, arts organisations, festivals, and galleries were had. In order to explore the challenges and potentials that exist within the tension between social and art, the invited panel of practitioners of the Limerick cultural scene discussed their experiences with socially engaged projects.

'ART and SOCIAL continuous tension' Symposium is organised by Eszter Nemethi, Sarah McDowell and Rosaleen Heavin of MA SPACE
