Who or what is a master, or an apprentice? The five artists Nele Thorrez (LUCA School of Arts, Brussels, °1992), Ciaran Nash (Limerick School of Art and Design, °1984), Kayt Hughes (Nottingham Trent University in Nottingham, °1992), Hannah Zandee (Fontys School of Fine and Performing Arts in Tilburg, °1992) and Kelly Schacht (Ghent, °1983) were given the assignment to jointly create an exhibition under the title Apprentice/Master. But what was asked of them, and what expected? According to Rancière’s idea of The Ignorant Schoolmaster, the apprentices should be able to learn independently, through searching. The master should adopt an unknowing attitude. The fact that the apprentice has undertaken the search is more important than the goal of this search. Above all, the role of the Unknowing Master is to stimulate discussion. With this method in mind, the artists involved in the exhibition explored their assignment and discovered that their ability to enter into dialogue is their only certainty.

The exhibition From Tokens To Totems: Five Pillars And A Platform: A Conversation: was the result of frequent dialogues and discussions by the participating artists on Skype. Contributing material to serve as a democratic basis for a discussion led to collaborations between the artists themselves, and with others. For example, we participated in the project 500 letters by Flemish artist Jasper Rigole, who developed an artist statement generator that generates a biography for each artist in 500 letters. Without any distinction between us, both apprentice and master had biographies generated for the hand-out for the exhibition, as a statement, for the last edition of Apprentice/Master of the season.
